Flat roofs have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years and are defined as a flat or sloping roof with a maximum pitch of 10 degrees, but most likely have much less that this, if any at all. They are usually made up of a supporting deck (concrete, steel or timber) with a waterproofing material of some kind and usually laid over some form of insulation material.
Like almost anything, flat roofs, if installed correctly are just as effective as pitched or sloping roofs but have the added advantage of being easily accessible to enable items of plant, vents, extracts, roof lights, solar panels or even roof gardens to be installed.
However, they can also be susceptible to problems.
Older roof waterproofing systems invariably deteriorate with age caused by many different things.
The result of any of the above invariably is water ingress into the building below or at least the saturation of the underlying insulation reducing its thermal efficiency.
At McConnell's, we specialise in the refurbishment of existing roofs and have a thorough understanding of the causes of these problems and what is required to renew them.
We specialise in installing a number of different types of flat roof systems, from Liquid Applied Reinforced Membranes, Single-Ply PVC membranes, Reinforced Bitumen Membranes and are approved installers with almost all of the proprietary systems.
Whether you are looking to simply prevent water ingress, want to improve thermal efficiency with the introduction of increased insulation to meet new ‘Part L Building Regulations or need to strip back and start again, we are able to help you through the entire process from an initial survey and inspection, Core sampling, U-value calculations, identification and initial design of the appropriate solutions, budget costing, preparation of specifications and submission of fixed costs.

At McConnell's we have a wealth of knowledge and experience that allows us to develop roof and cladding solutions for buildings, considering technical performance criteria such as fire, moisture, acoustic, thermal, detailing, wind and snow loads that can be attributed to the building envelope.
As with most things, design is key to the project and we use structural engineers to check and approve our designs.
We can supply and fix a wide range of solutions to suit your requirements and budgets. This could involve replacing the entire roof or wall cladding or alternatively we can over-clad existing roofs and walls. Incorporating the skills of our other divisions we can provide an entire roofing solution package.
Refurbishment is the principal area of our core business and McConnell's have been removing Chrysotile Asbestos Cement and Galbestos roofs for over 25 years.
Our comprehensive understanding of the necessary health and safety requirements and legislation covering the removal of the sheeting or over-cladding of the roof safely, ensures that at the very top of our thought processes, proposals and designs is the protection of our roofing operatives, customer employees and the public.
We believe in a strong customer focus and will always work closely with our customers on their 'refurbishment' and 'new build' contracts using the experience of our staff and guidance from our in-house Health & Safety team to deliver quality projects safely, on budget and to programme.
